New study about teenage depression and self-harm

Being part of a sub-culture once myself I know about all the ups and downs it can bring but know nothing about teenage self-harm subculture.

According to recent surveys, our survey said 'three to four more teenage kids self-harm because they are joined at the hip by sub cultures.

Psychiatrists say at lot of things to make kids during teenage years happy.

They are now saying alternative sub-cultures can make people want to commit suicide.

Education Teachers have an obligation to make surveys of the results they are getting with their students in British schools. VoRUK Firefighters battle Glasgow School of Art blaze

The Voice of Russia reports a fire in Glasgow which started with a projector. Damage was done to a students art work. A major fire is burning in Glasgow's iconic School of Arts that has potentially destroyed students' work. Eyewitnesses said that the fire began when a projector exploded in the Charles Rennie Mackintosh building at around 12.30. Polar Explorer Day in Russia

Polar Explorer Day, marked on May 21, celebrates the establishment of the world's first drifting ice station in the North Pole in 1937.

The Severny Polyus-1 research station was opened on a drifting ice floe and was used by four explorers who drifted for nine months from the North Pole toward southern Greenland, conducting numerous scientific observations. 

May 21 has long been celebrated in parts of northern Russia as a holiday. The Voice of Russia.

Scotland and Russia unite to celebrate World Whisky Day

May 17, 2014 will be the first time World Whisky Day will take place in Russia and will be marked in Moscow with a tie-up between Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky and the Sco-Rus Organisation. Glenfiddich and Sco-Res are staging a music and dance programme, featuring Scottish, Irish and Russian artistes in Moscow on Saturday. UN report on human rights abuses in Ukraine "totally biased - Russian FM

A report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warning of the "alarming deterioration in the human rights situation" in Ukraine has been denounced by the Russian Foreign Ministry as serving the needs of the Kiev regime. Austin Mitchell British Grimsby MP announces retirement at 80

Computers recognise 21 facial expressions that combine six human emotions

Tim Ecott reports over on The Voice of Russia. Scientists at Ohio State University say they have identified 21 facial expressions that betray human emotions. Normally there are six basic emotions but the study says that people are capable of producing expressions that combine conflicting feelings. The Oxford psychologist and body language expert Dr Peter Collett told VoR's Tim Ecott he's not entirely surprised by the findings.

Royal Mail: Government defends privatisation after NAO criticism

The government has defended the privatisation of Royal Mail last year, despite a scathing report from the government’s spending watchdog. The National Audit Office (NAO) said the sale was rushed and the business could have been sold at a higher price, making an extra £750 million for taxpayers. Muslim Brotherhood: British government orders probe into London base

A post originally shared by Natasha Moriaty. British Prime Minister David Cameron has ordered an urgent investigation into the London base of the Egyptian political party the Muslim Brotherhood. There are fears that the organisation could be planning extremist activities in Britain. The Brotherhood is Egypt's largest and oldest Islamist organisation and controlled the Egyptian government until Mohammed Morsi was ousted from the presidency last July. Natasha Moriarty reports.

Nick Griffin says: UKIP is a pale carbon copy of the BNP

The British National Party (BNP) has caused controversy by distributing food to needy homes, but only if the recipients are 'indigenous Britons'. The party has been accused of promoting racist views, but they claim that there are plenty of British voters who think they're doing the right thing. Breast cancer self-examination doing more harm than good, says GP

An article over on the Voice of Russia by Brendan Cole. The breast cancer awareness campaign championed by the Sun newspaper calling for women to examine their breasts regularly may actually cause more harm than good, according to Glasgow GP Margaret McCartney. She said that public health messages should be based on evidence. VoR's Brendan Cole spoke to Dr McCartney.

Midlands and North in UK will lose out most if Britain exits EU

The European Union supports 4.2 million jobs in the UK, according to new analysis by the Centre for Economic and Business Research, which says more jobs in the Midlands and the North of England are associated with EU membership, and it is these places that will suffer if the UK decides to leave. A landmark United Nations report on climate change has warned that the impacts of global warming are likely to be "severe, pervasive and irreversible".

Crossrail: More ancient skeletons uncovered, this time in known cemetery

Yet another clutch of ancient skeletons has been uncovered during excavations for the Crossrail transport project in central London. It's thought that the group of skeletons dates from the time of the 'Black Death' - the plague which wiped out about a third of the British population in the middle of the 14th century. We spoke to Don Walker, a senior osteologist with Museum of London Archaeology, about the significance of this particular find.

Death penalty on the decline, global spikes in executions

The death penalty is on the decline globally, according to a new report by Amnesty International. The human rights organisation said that 21 countries had carried out executions last year, but the number of countries which had the death penalty on their statute books had dropped from 63 to 58. China remains the biggest culprit. We spoke to Jan Wetzel, a death penalty expert from Amnesty.

Calls for Germany to bring more people to justice over WWII crimes

There have been calls for Germany to make more arrests of alleged Auschwitz guards. This follows the detention of nine people suspected of working at the concentration camp during World War Two. In September German's main agency for investigating Nazi war crimes recommended the prosecution of 30 guards from Auschwitz. Scott Craig spoke to Dr Efraim Zuroff, chief Nazi hunter at the Simon Wiesenthal centre.

Chemicals in food packaging should be regulated - scientists

For some years there have been concerns about whether plastic packaging can cause harmful chemicals to leak into foodstuffs. Now the Food Packaging Forum in Switzerland has expressed concerns in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health that stricter monitoring of chemicals in packaging should be carried out. We spoke to Dr Jane Muncke, managing director of the Food Packaging Forum, about the dangers.

British MPs hopeful of reopening of diplomatic relations with Iran

A delegation of senior British MPs say they are hopeful of a return to normal diplomatic relations with Iran, following four days of talks in Teheran. Ex-Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, ex-Chancellor Norman Lamont, Ben Wallace MP and Jeremy Corbyn MP held talks with the Iranian authorities and visited the UK embassy, which they say could be swiftly repoened.
